You’ll need to be comfortable with basic crochet stitches (chain, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, treble crochet), as well as basic sewing to join the parts. Some improvisation is encouraged for fit and neatness.

Materials

  • Two yarn colors (sample: white and red); medium-weight yarn recommended.
  • Crochet hook size to match your yarn (commonly 4mm/G or 4.5mm/7).
  • Yarn needle (for sewing and weaving in ends).
  • Scissors.
  • Stitch markers (optional, for aligning pieces).
  • Ruler or tape measure.

Step-by-Step Pattern

1. Granny Squares (Make 6)

Row 1:

  1. Begin with a magic ring.
  2. Ch 2 (counts as first dc).
  3. Make 2 dc in ring.
  4. Ch 2.
  5. [3 dc, ch 2], repeat three more times (so you have 4 groups of 3 dc separated by ch-2 spaces).Crochet Bow Book Cover
  6. Pull tail to close center.
  7. Ch 1, join the round with a hdc in the space between the chains and the first dc.
  8. Ch 2 (counts as first dc for next round).

Row 2:

  1. In same corner space, 2 dc (with ch-2 = 3 dc in total).
  2. In next corner: 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc all in the space.
  3. Repeat in each corner.
  4. At end, ch 1, join with hdc as before.

Row 3 & Row 4:

  • Continue the granny square pattern:
    • In side spaces: 3 dc.
    • In corner spaces: 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc.
  • Join rounds as before: ch 1 and hdc join.
  • Finish off after Row 4, leaving a short tail (weave in ends).

Make 6 squares in total: 4 with bows (see below), 2 plain.Crochet Bow Book Cover

2. Crochet Bows (Make 4)

Main Bow:

  1. Ch 21.
  2. In back of chains:
    • 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook,
    • 1 hdc in next ch,
    • 2 dc,
    • 2 tr,
    • Repeat: 2 dc, 1 hdc, 2 sl st.
    • Mirror: 1 hdc, 2 dc, 2 tr, 2 dc, 1 hdc.
    • In last chain: 3 sc, rotate to work along other side of the foundation chain.
    • Repeat pattern along opposite side for symmetry.
  3. End with sl st to first st.
  4. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Bow Bottom:

  1. Ch 15.
  2. Along foundation chain:
    • 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 tr, 2 dc, 2 sl st.
    • Mirror: 2 dc, 1 tr, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc.
  3. Join with a sl st to first st.
  4. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Bow Assembly:

  1. With needle and yarn tail, sew main bow ends together (form bow shape).
  2. Add bottom piece under bow, wrap a few times with yarn to pinch together, knot securely.
  3. Make 4 bows in total.Crochet Bow Book Cover

3. Attach Bows to Granny Squares

  1. Place each bow on a square corner (as desired).
  2. Sew through the bow's center and center white stitches of the square.
  3. Keep sewing hidden from back side for neatness.
  4. Weave in all tails.

4. Join the Squares

  1. Lay out 4 squares with bows (front panel and flap), and 2 plain squares (back panel).
  2. Join together with the "zigzag" or whipstitch seam, always aligning chain spaces at the corners:
    • Use red yarn and needle.
    • Pick up two chains at each corner to start and end.
    • Stitch along edge, catching two loops per stitch.
    • Join front and back panels and flap as needed.Crochet Bow Book Cover

5. Add Height (to the Front Panel)

  1. With front panel flat, attach yarn at corner space.
  2. Ch 2, dc in same space.
  3. Work 1 dc in each st across front, 1 dc in each ch-space as you come to it.
  4. For seam: insert hook in middle, dc.
  5. Repeat for desired rows (usually 2-3), until panel is book height.
  6. Fasten off and weave in tails.

6. Join All Panels

  1. Lay all three main pieces (front panel, back panel, flap) flat and align.
  2. Sew panels together along their joining edges, using chains at corners for neatness.
  3. When joining the front, hold wrong sides together for an invisible seam.
  4. Repeat with other sides.
  5. At sides, sew up from bottom to the opening—use a stitch marker to mark where to stop for the flap.
  6. Fasten off and weave in all ends.

7. Edging the Top Flap

  1. Attach yarn at side of top flap.
  2. In each chain space: 2 hdc, 1 dc, 2 hdc.
  3. At corners: (1 hdc, 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc, 1 hdc).
  4. At center: place 1 dc in the actual seam for even shaping.
  5. Continue to end, sl st to first st. Fasten off and weave in ends.

8. Crochet the Tie

  1. Cut a strand of yarn about 100 cm.
  2. Use the two-strand chain technique:
    • Insert hook into top center of flap edging.
    • Use measured strand for yarn overs, working yarn for pulling through.
    • Chain 115 sts (or as long as you want).
  3. At end, chain with both strands together for security, fasten off, and weave in ends.Crochet Bow Book Cover

Tutor's Suggestions & Uses

  • Sizing: Adjust the number of granny square rows, or the number of DC rows on the front panel, to fit any size book, planner, or sketchbook.
  • Color Play: Try different color combinations or add beads to bows for variety.
  • Practical Uses: Protects book covers from dirt and wear, and is a wonderful, personal gift for book lovers, students, or teachers.
  • Keep it Neat: Weave in ends as you go to avoid tangling.
  • Finishing Touch: For a neater edge, always align joins at the chain spaces.

Tip

Don’t worry if your stitch counts or seam lengths aren’t identical each time—what matters is keeping the stitches even and adjusting as needed for symmetry and neatness!

Conclusion

You have crafted a charming crochet book cover featuring classic granny squares and cute bows. Your finished product protects your favorite reads and brightens your day with handmade style. This is a wonderful project for gift-giving or personal use.
