  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle

Difficulty Level

Advanced Beginner
This project uses basic crochet stitches (chain, double crochet, single crochet) and color changes, but you will work increases and shaping.

Pattern Steps

1. Foundation and Center of Rug

  • Chain 8.
  • Join with a slip stitch to first chain, forming a ring.

2. Base Row — Orange

  • Chain 3 (counts as first double crochet), work 1 more double crochet into the ring.
  • Chain 2 (space), 2 double crochets in the ring. Repeat until you have 5 groups of 2 double crochets, separated by chain-2.
  • Slip stitch to the starting chain to finish the round.Crochet Half-moon Rug

3. Grow the Fan Shape

Row 1 (Increase Row):

  • Chain 3 to turn (counts as first dc).
  • For each group:
    • Double crochet in the first dc of the group.
    • In the space between the two dc, work 1 dc (increase).
    • Double crochet in the next dc.
  • Chain 2 between groups as before.
  • Repeat for all groups. Each group now has 3 dc.Crochet Half-moon Rug

Row 2:

  • Chain 3 and turn.
  • Double crochet in the same manner: 1 dc above each dc of the previous row, work an increase (dc) in the space between pairs of dc in each group, so each group gains a stitch.
  • Continue to keep groups growing.
  • Keep repeating: each row adds 1 more dc to every group. Continue, always working a dc increase in the middle of every existing group, separating groups with chain spaces.
  • After you have finished the orange yarn center section, change to white yarn.

4. White Section: Continue Growing the Semicircle

  • Attach white yarn, fasten off orange.
  • For each row:
    • Chain 3 and turn.
    • Work a double crochet in each dc of the previous row, and always make an increase (double crochet) in the center of each group, between the last two dc.
    • Chain 2 (or 3 or 4, as needed—see TIP below) between each group.
  • Every row each group has one more dc than before.
  • Adjust chains between groups as needed:
    • When groups have 7+ stitches, use chain 3 between groups
    • When groups have 12–16 stitches or more, use chain 4
    • As groups grow past 16, increase to chain 5 between groups for flatter shaping.
  • Repeat until each group contains 11 dc.Crochet Half-moon Rug

5. Switch Back to Orange Yarn

  • Attach orange yarn and fasten off white.
  • Continue the pattern, increasing each row by one dc per group.
  • Keep adding extra chain stitches between groups as needed:
    • For rows with 12–16 dc per group: chain 4 between groups.
    • For 17 or more dc per group: chain 5.
  • Stop increasing when you reach 21 dc per group.

6. Finishing Edge — White Scallops

  • Attach white yarn.
  • Start at one edge: Chain 3, work 1 double crochet in the same stitch.
  • Work a scallop as follows:
    • Chain 3, slip stitch in same stitch (makes a loop).
    • Crochet Half-moon Rug
    • Work 2 more double crochets in same place.
    • Skip 2 stitches, slip stitch in next stitch.
    • Repeat all around the curved edge to create a scalloped border, adjusting skips as needed for even spacing.
  • Use a tapestry needle to weave in all yarn ends.Crochet Half-moon Rug

Tutor’s Suggestions

  • If your rug starts to curl or ruffle, add extra chains between groups for more space and a flatter finish.
  • If the rug bunches up, your tension is too tight—try loosening up, or going up a hook size.
  • When joining new colors, always weave in your ends as you go for easier finishing.

Uses

  • Place at entrance doors, by a bed, or in a hallway.
  • Make in colors to match your decor.
  • Works great as a kitchen or bathroom mat.

Tip

For perfectly even fans, always place your increases at the center of each group and adjust the chain spaces as the rug expands. This ensures your half-moon stays flat and beautifully shaped from start to finish.

Conclusion

With just basic crochet stitches, you built a stunning, robust half-moon rug, ideal for brightening up your home. Experiment with different color changes or group sizes for varied effects—enjoy your functional, handmade art piece.
