Round 3:

  • Chain 3.

  • Around the corner:

  • Work 1 dc in next 21 sts.
  • Same as above for the final curve.
  • Join with slip stitch.

3. Forming the Sides (Post Stitches)

Round 4:

  • Chain 3.
  • Work back post double crochet (BPdc) in each stitch around (picked up from behind each dc of the previous round).
  • Join with slip stitch.

4. Rising the Bootie

Rounds 5–7:

  • Alternate stitches as follows:
    • Chain 3.
    • First st: BPdc.
    • Next st: front post double crochet (FPdc).
    • Alternate BPdc and FPdc around.
  • At the end of each round, join with slip stitch.
  • Repeat for three rounds total.
(This creates the textured ribbed sides.)

5. Marking and Dividing

  • Total stitches per round: 72.
  • Mark 36 sts for the front (instep), 36 sts for the back (heel) using scrap yarn or stitch markers.
    • Put seam area to the heel (back), so the front is smooth.

6. Instep Shaping

Row 1 (Instep):

  • Attach yarn at center front marker.
  • Chain 3, work 6 dc (7 total), picking up only the inside loops.
  • Fasten side to next FPdc with slip stitch.

Row 2 (Instep):

  • Turn.
  • Chain 3, work dc in each st across, increase to 8 dc (last dc is worked halfway, next dc worked halfway, close both together).
  • Attach with slip stitch to side shoe.

Row 3–5 (Instep):

  • Continue in this manner:
    • Each row increases by 1 dc (Row 3: 9, Row 4: 10, Row 5: 11).
    • At row ends, close last two dc together for shaping.
    • Attach end of each row to side of shoe with slip stitch.
  • Fasten off at the end of Row 5.

7. Cuff and Top

Round 1 (Cuff):

  • Attach yarn, chain 3.
  • Work FPdc and BPdc around the top edge and sides.
  • When working over the instep, use normal dc stitches.
  • Join with slip stitch.

Rounds 2–5 (Cuff):

  • Continue alternating FPdc and BPdc for four rounds to form the tube (cuff).
  • Remove stitch markers once the cuff is complete.

8. Tapering the Cuff

Round 6:

  • On the front (instep), work only the FPdc columns (skip BPdc) to reduce width and create a snug fit.
  • If you want a looser cuff, alternate FPdc and BPdc normally.
  • Repeat for Rounds 7–9 (total of 4 tapered rounds).

9. Picot Edging (Optional, Feminine Version)

  • Chain 2, then chain 3 more (total 5).
  • Slip stitch into the first of the last three chains to form a picot.
  • Single crochet in the next st, chain 3, slip stitch into the first of those three chains.
  • Repeat picot pattern all around the cuff edge.
  • For the masculine version, leave the edge plain.

10. Finishing

  • Slip stitch into the base of the first picot or the initial st to finish.
  • Weave in all ends along the inside of the cuff and sole.
  • Cut yarn.

Tutor’s Suggestions

  • Use a yarn needle to help hide ends securely inside the cuff.
  • Keep the seam at the heel for a neat look.
  • If you want a looser fitting bootie, omit some of the front post/tapering steps.

Tip

Mark the division between instep and heel carefully. Symmetrical booties look polished and fit better!

Conclusion

Congratulations! You have crocheted a pair of soft, warm wool booties perfect for chilly days. Enjoy their comfort, gift them to loved ones, or make several pairs in different colors. This beginner-friendly pattern offers great practice with post stitches and simple shaping. Happy crocheting!
