Level of Difficulty

Intermediate
This coat is perfect for those who are comfortable with foundation chains, double crochet, shaping armholes and necklines, and are ready for a more involved garment project.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Circulo Classic yarn (100% acrylic, 100g/150m skein), Military Green color (5398)
    • P (S): 6 skeins
    • M: 7 skeins
    • G (L): 9 skeins
    • GG (XL): 11 skeins
  • Hook: 4.5 mm crochet hook
  • Notions: Size 10 tapestry needle (for finishing and sewing)
  • Measuring tape & scissors

Step-by-Step Pattern

1. Foundation and Stitch Multiple

  • Begin by measuring your bust and making a starting chain to match (for M size: 132 chains).
  • NOTE: Stitch pattern requires a multiple of 12. Adjust your starting chain to nearest multiple of 12 for your size.

2. First Row (Foundation Row)

  • Skip 1 ch, 1 sc in next ch.
  • Ch 5, skip 3 ch, 1 sc in next ch; repeat across to end.
  • Finish with 2 ch after last sc and 1 sc in very last base ch.

3. Pattern Stitch Rows

  • Row 1: 1 ch, 1 sc over the previous sc, 7 dc in next ch-5 space, 1 sc in next ch-5 space, repeat to end.
  • Row 2: 1 ch, 1 sc over sc, ch 5, 1 sc in 2nd dc of group, ch 5, 1 sc in penultimate dc of group, ch 5, 1 sc in next ch-5 space, repeat.Crochet Long Cardigan

Repeat these two rows, alternating until you reach a height of 58 cm (or longer if you want a coat below the knee).

4. Body Shaping & Division

  • Divide for Armholes and Fronts/Back:
    • Take shoulder-to-shoulder measurement (back width) and mark sections for:
      • Right front (¼ of bust width)
      • Armhole space (about 4 cm)
      • Back (½ bust width)
      • Armhole (4 cm)
      • Left front (¼ bust width)
  • Mark positions with stitch markers or contrasting yarn.

5. Back Piece

  • Start at armhole marking, attach yarn, and continue in pattern stitch for 19 cm for armhole height.
  • Fasten off, leaving a long tail for shoulder seam.Crochet Long Cardigan

6. Front (Left and Right)

  • Attach yarn at each front marking.
  • Work 10 cm straight in pattern stitch.
  • Begin neckline shaping:
On every right-side row at the neck edge, eliminate the matching motif/group at the neck edge by omitting its pattern and working partial groups as needed.
Continue decreasing at neck edge every row as described in the transcript, until only 2 stitch motifs remain.
  • Work until front matches back in armhole height.
  • Fasten off, leaving a tail for seaming.

7. Join Shoulders

  • With right sides facing, align stitch motifs of shoulders and sew together with tapestry needle, taking care to only stitch through edge loops for a flat seam.Crochet Long Cardigan

8. Sleeves

  • With RS out, join yarn at sleeve opening.
  • Work in the round, maintaining the stitch sequence but adapting:
    • First decrease round: Work groups of 6 dc separated by 4-ch spaces.
    • Subsequent sleeve rounds:
      • After every 5 rounds, decrease by making groups of 5 dc and 3-ch spaces.
      • When you reach desired sleeve width, work a further decrease round with 4 dc per group.
    • Continue rounds until the sleeve measures your required length (~48 cm), ending with a group row.

9. Finishing Sleeves

  • Work an edging round: groups of 5 dc.
  • Fasten off, weave in ends.
  • Repeat for second sleeve.

10. Bottom and Front Edging

  • Bottom Edge: Join yarn at back bottom corner. Work along the hem: in each ch-space, make 6 dc, then sc in next space. Continue all the way around.
  • Front Opening & Collar: Join yarn at front lower corner, work 6 dc in each ch-space up the front, around the neckline, and down the other front. Finish with sc at corners for neat edges.Crochet Long Cardigan
  • Fasten off, weave in all ends.

Tutor’s Suggestions

  • Measure often; customize length to suit your body.
  • Keep all skeins from the same dye lot.
  • Mark your armholes precisely so sleeves sit evenly.

Uses

  • Wear as a statement piece over jeans or dresses
  • Layer for business or casual winter looks
  • Make in other colors for seasonal variety

Tip

Try on your coat before fixing the sleeves and collar for length and fit adjustments. Blocking the finished pieces will give your coat a more professional and polished look.

Conclusion

You have completed a beautiful, warm, and stylish crochet winter coat with a modern fit and elegant details. Wear it proudly, and don’t forget to share your finished masterpiece with friends or on social media to inspire others.
