Materials Needed:
- Yarn: Medium Weight #4 (Example used: Neco Monalisa, an anti-pilling acrylic)
- Crochet Hook: Size I (5.5 mm)
- Scissors and a yarn needle for finishing
Pattern Notes:
- Stitch Pattern Repeat: Multiple of 5 + 1
- The stitch is reversible and looks the same on both sides.
- The pattern consists of a two-row repeat after the foundation row.
Foundation Row:
- Start by chaining in multiples of 5 until you reach the desired width, then add one more chain to the base chain. (For the sample, 26 chains were made: 25 for the multiple of 5, plus 1.)
- In the second chain from the hook, work a single crochet.
- Work one single crochet in every chain to the end. This row sets up a sturdy base and does not count as Row 1.
Row 1:
- Chain 1 and turn. This chain does not count as a stitch.
- Work a double crochet into the very first stitch.
- Chain 1, skip one stitch, and prepare to make a cluster in the next stitch.
- To create a cluster: Yarn over, insert the hook into the stitch and pull up a loop, yarn over, and pull through the first two loops on the hook. Repeat this two more times in the same stitch. You should end up with four loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all four loops, then chain 1.
- Skip two stitches, then work a double crochet in the next stitch.
- Working backwards, complete a cross double by double crocheting into the stitch that was just skipped (this creates the crossed effect).
- Chain 1. Repeat the sequence of skipping one stitch, working a cluster, chaining one, skipping two stitches, double crocheting into the next stitch, and performing the cross double.
- Continue this pattern to the end of the row, finishing with a double crochet in the last stitch.
Row 2:
- Chain 1 and turn.
- Directly double crochet in the first stitch and chain 1.
- Start with a cross double crochet into the second chain-one space from the previous row's cluster, then do another cross double crochet back into the first space you skipped.
- Cluster stitch: This time, clusters are made between the cross double crochets from the previous row. Insert your hook in between the cross double stitches, not into a stitch, to create your cluster.
- Continue the pattern of cross double crochets and clusters across, ending with a double crochet in the last stitch.
For Row 3:
- Chain 1 and turn.
- Double crochet in the first stitch and chain 1.
- This row starts with a cluster stitch made between the cross doubles of the previous row, followed by the pattern of cross doubles and clusters as established.
- Finish with a double crochet in the last stitch.
Repeat Pattern:
- Continue repeating Rows 2 and 3 until the piece reaches the desired length.
